Unicorn

Startup slang for a private company valued at $1 billion or more. It is a headline label — not proof of a great business or a sure exit.

Related: Venture capital (VC) · Post-money valuation · Initial public offering (IPO)

A bit more nuance
  • Paper valuations can fall; unicorns can become “undercorns.”
  • Emerging-market unicorns are rarer in headlines but real in pockets.
